What are the types of fillings used for children?
• Our choice of material for restoring cavities in the molars are composite resins, and resin modified glass ionomer cements. These are tooth coloured materials.
• We restore the front teeth with tooth-colored composite resins that are similar in color and texture to natural teeth. For long-lasting aesthetics, zirconia crowns are the preferred restorative
• For teeth that are badly mutilated, we recommend full coverage using a crown. This ensures longevity of the restoration. The choices of crowns are either stainless steel crowns that are durable but metallic in colour, OR tooth coloured zirconia crowns. Both crowns are preformed crowns especially used in children’s teeth. They are placed on the tooth in a single sitting, are extremely durable and long lasting.

Is the tooth permanently free of cavities after being filled?
Treating (repairing/ restoring) a tooth with a filling by no means protects teeth from further decay (cavities) unless a Crown is placed. A tooth is always susceptible to further decay in the event of poor diet and/ or oral hygiene.

How long do fillings last?
With good oral hygiene, most fillings last a long time. In the milk teeth, with adequate care, fillings will last for the life of the tooth. Brush and floss regularly apart from regular check-ups with us.

Are stainless steel crowns used in the permanent teeth of teenagers?
Yes. They are the treatment of choice in young permanent molars that are hypomineralised (Molar Incisor Hypomineralization). They are also used when young molars require root canal treatment. The crowns can be replaced with a more aesthetic alternative, once the teenager turns into a young adult.
