My child sucks his/ her thumb, fingers, lip. Should I worry?
• It is a normal instinct for an infant to suck on the thumb or finger. It provides security. For young babies, it's a way to make contact with and learn about the world. In fact, babies begin to suck on their fingers or thumbs even before they are born.
• Most babies stop by age 2 – 3. At this stage the habit should be ignored.
• After age 4, the habit should be discouraged. Persistence of a digit/ lip sucking habit can cause teeth to be pushed, create crowded, crooked teeth, or bite problems.
• Though counseling helps in many cases, some children may need a habit breaking appliance.
• We will be glad to suggest ways to address a prolonged thumb/ finger/ lip sucking habit.
